Hauptmann Erich Neumann was a Heer officer, based in Southern France, during Operation Dragoon 1944.

He is part of a small German patrol that gets ambushed by three American Paratroopers. His men are killed and he flees into the woods, with one of the Paratroopers in pursuit. He trips and is captured by the Paratrooper. On his knees he waits for the American to shoot him. A shot rings out but the Paratrooper didn't shoot him. He is later part of a small German tank convoy when it is ambushed by the same three paratroopers and some local French Resistance fighters. Casualties are high on both sides. Neumann finds and carries one of the wounded paratroopers to an abandoned warehouse and bandages his wounds. Neumann tries to make friends, but the American questions whether he should hate Neumann and why Neumann didn't hate him. When night falls, Neumann is writing in his notebook and wincing in pain. He pulls back his shirt to reveal he has been shot in the gut. In the morning, Neumann has died from his wounds and the Paratrooper is found by patrolling Americans.
